Why do people wear masks at costume parties?

Masks have been used across cultures for centuries to let people temporarily step outside their everyday identity. In many traditions, wearing a mask was believed to let a person embody a spirit, ancestor, or alternate persona for the duration of a ritual or celebration. That same idea carried into modern costume parties and masquerade balls — the mask gives people permission to act differently than they normally would, hidden just enough to feel free.
